2023: Atiku wins PDP presidential ticket, defeats Wike, Saraki, others

Nigeria’s former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has been elected as the standard-bearer of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 presidential election.

Atiku is emerging again, a presidential candidate of a party in his sixth attempt to be Nigeria’s president.

The newly-elected PDP presidential candidate had slugged it out with three top contenders which include Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, Akwa Ibom Governor, Udom Emmanuel and former Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

Earlier on Friday, before the voting began at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, on Friday, May 29, 2022, Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, had stepped down for Atiku, a move which was believed strengthened the Adamawa politician’s bid for the ticket.

At the end of the PDP presidential primary election, Atiku polled 371 votes, leaving his closest rival, Wike, with 237 votes, while Saraki, scored 70 votes.

Others, Emmanuel, 38 votes, Mohammed, 38 votes, Anyim Pius Anyim, 14 votes, Mrs Tari Diana Oliver, 1 vote and Sam Ohuabunwa, 1 vote.

Recalled the 75-year-old Atiku was the PDP’s candidate in the 2019 presidential election which he lost to President Muhammadu Buhari.
