Ekweremadu applauds woman succeeding woman as Nigeria’s Senate confirms Justice Dongban-Mensem to be Appeal Court president

Nigeria’s Senate has confirmed Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem as the country’s President of the Court of Appeal.

President Muhammadu Buhari, had, earlier in a letter to the Senate, asked the lawmakers to approve the nomination of Justice Dongban-Mensem as the President of the Court of Appeal (PCA).

Thereafter, her confirmation followed a report of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters headed by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, who said no petition was received against her nomination.

With her confirmation, Dongban-Mensem will be succeeding her fellow woman on the bench, Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwa, who was sworn-in on as the President of the Court of Appeal on April 17, 2014 by Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, who emerged the first female Chief Justice of Nigeria.

“The nominee is a fit and proper person for appointment as the President of the Court of Appeal.

“The Committee recommends that the Senate do confirm the nomination of Honourable Justice M.B. Dongban-Mensem as Honourable President of the Court of Appeal,” Bamidele was quoted as saying on the Senate Twitter handle.

The Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Ike Ekweramdu, in his congratulatory message, applauded Dongban-Mensem’s nomination, as he said women are making progress in the scheme of things, noting that a woman is succeeding a woman.

“This is because Justice Mendem is succeeding a woman who served and retired in the same capacity, ” Ekweremadu said, while he urged Dongban-Mensem to join forces with others to carry out reforms in the justice system especially in election matters.
