Jailbreak in Benin as hoodlums set inmates free

A jailbreak has been reported at the correctional centre in Benin, Edo state, with a number of prisoners escaping from the facility.

A viral video of the incident captured prisoners jumping over the prison’s fence.

Also, an account said, some hoodlums had broken down the walls of Oko prison located on Benin-Sapele road, setting inmates free.

It was also said that the hoodlums, who mobilised in large numbers, gained access into the prison through a perimeter fence.

The Edo police spokesman, Chidi Nwabuzor, had said the police were already planning on actions to carry out.

However, the number of inmates freed by the hoodlums could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

Benin City, the Edo State capital has witnessed an outbreak of violence following the #EndSARS protests.

Meanwhile, Edo State Government has declares 24-hour curfew in the state.
