President Kais Saied issued the order with a list of judges to be dismissed, accusing them of corruption and stalling terrorism cases. Critics have blasted the dismissals as an “affront” to judicial independence.<\/p>\n

Tunisian President Kais Saied<\/a>\u00a0has fired 57 of the country’s judges, allegedly for involvement in corruption and obstructing hearings of terrorism cases.<\/p>\n

A list of names of those who had been sacked was published in the early hours of\u00a0Thursday morning.<\/p>\n

Said accused the judges of\u00a0financial and ethical corruption, collusion with political parties\u00a0and “deviating the course of terrorism cases,” among other allegations.<\/p>\n

In February, Saied gave himself power over the judiciary<\/a>\u00a0by establishing a new judicial watchdog which allowed him to fire judges and block promotions and appointments.<\/p>\n

Regional director of the International Commission of Jurists, Said Bernabia, slammed the dismissals in a series of tweets. “The amendment is an affront to the separation of powers and judicial independence. Through it, the collapse of the rule of law the constitutional order is now complete,” Bernabia said.<\/p>\n

The president has been accused of increasing his grip on power since last year’s suspension of\u00a0the country’s parliament, the dismissal of\u00a0the sitting prime minister and granting himself executive powers.<\/p>\n

Saied has in the past said that the measures he has taken are intended to save Tunisia from collapse.<\/p>\n

However, critics say he is leading the country firmly on the path toward\u00a0authoritarian rule.<\/p>\n

Saied,\u00a0insists that his political moves are democratic<\/a>\u00a0and have been necessary to guide the country to a new constitution, through\u00a0a referendum planned for\u00a0July 2022.<\/p>\n
