President Joe Biden\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0he is\u00a0dropping out of the presidential race<\/a>\u00a0after mounting\u00a0calls from Democrats<\/a>\u00a0for him to end his reelection bid. Biden\u00a0endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris<\/a> as the party\u2019s new nominee and said he will speak to the nation later this week in more detail.<\/p>\n

Harris could be the first Black woman and first Asian American<\/a>\u00a0to lead the ticket of a major political party. Other notable Democrats, including\u00a0Bill and Hillary Clinton<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0leading progressives<\/a>, also quickly announced their support for Harris.\u00a0Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries<\/a> praised Biden\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n

With Biden out of the race, individual delegates will need to select the party\u2019s nominee<\/a>\u00a0either during a virtual roll call tentatively scheduled for early August, or on the\u00a0convention floor in Chicago next month.<\/a>\u00a0This is the first time a US president has exited\u00a0a reelection run in decades.<\/a><\/p>\n

Trump reacts:\u00a0<\/strong>In a phone call with CNN<\/a> after Biden announced his exit,\u00a0Trump described Biden<\/a> as \u201cthe worst president by far in the history of our country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Nanette Barragan\u00a0endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris<\/a>\u00a0for president on Sunday, after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race.<\/p>\n

Barragan described Biden as \u201cone of the most consequential presidents in American history\u201d and said Democrats would work to ensure his legacy is \u201csecure\u201d and support \u201cHarris as the party moves forward, unified, in our efforts to put the American people over politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n

It is unclear whether her schedule will proceed as planned amid Sunday\u2019s monumental announcement from President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n

She had been set to travel to Milwaukee on Tuesday for a campaign event, marking her fifth visit to Wisconsin in 2024.<\/p>\n
