The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially begun the payment of the new N70,000 minimum wage, which will significantly impact over 1.2 million civil servants.<\/p>\n

This wage increase, effective from July 29, 2024, follows the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act and represents a substantial rise from the previous minimum wage of N30,000.<\/p>\n

The total salary expenditure for civil servants is projected to reach approximately N4 trillion*annually.<\/p>\n

The government has issued a detailed salary table outlining adjustments across various levels within the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (COMPSS).<\/p>\n

While the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA) has praised the wage increase, it raised concerns regarding penalties for non-compliance by employers in both public and private sectors, emphasising that paying below this threshold could result in imprisonment.<\/p>\n
