President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing a prolonged political crisis and governance paralysis that has crippled the state’s ability to function effectively.

This decision was announced during a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, March 18, 2025.

Tinubu expressed deep concern over the situation, stating that despite his personal interventions and efforts by other well-meaning Nigerians, the crisis has persisted without resolution.

The governor’s demolition of the state House of Assembly on December 13, 2023, and his failure to rebuild it have significantly contributed to the stalemate.

Additionally, recent security reports highlighted incidents of pipeline vandalism by militants, which the governor has not addressed effectively.

As a result, Tinubu invoked Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution to declare the state of emergency, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the state House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.

Retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas has been appointed as the Administrator to oversee the state’s affairs during this period, while the judiciary will continue to function as usual.
