Newly elected and returning members will take the oath of office and the full House of Representatives will vote to elect a new Speaker. Nancy Pelosi, who has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/01\/03\/politics\/nancy-pelosi-house-speaker-vote-new-congress\/index.html\">served as House speaker\u00a0<\/a>in the 116th Congress, is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/12\/29\/politics\/nancy-pelosi-speakership\/index.html\">on track\u00a0<\/a>to remain in the role.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"el_leafmedia l-big-top\">\n<div class=\"body_text\">\n<p>House Democrats kept control of the House in the November elections, but will now have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/12\/09\/politics\/house-democratic-majority-biden-administration\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a narrower majority\u00a0<\/a>after suffering a string of losses, despite projections that they would win more seats. Gavin Newsom appointed him to fill Vice President-elect Kamala Harris&#8217; Senate seat. Harris and President-elect Joe Biden will be sworn in on January 20 during the presidential inauguration.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/11\/30\/politics\/mark-kelly-swearing-in-arizona-senator\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Kelly<\/a>, a retired Navy captain and NASA astronaut, a new Democratic senator from Arizona, was sworn in during the month of December after winning a special election.<\/p>\n<p>The first day of the new Congress will look a bit different this year with safety precautions in place to respond to the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thedailyleaks.com\/pope-condemns-holidaymakers-fleeing-covid-19-lockdowns\/\">Pope condemns holidaymakers fleeing COVID-19 lockdowns<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The number of senators sworn in at a time will be smaller to minimize crowding and senators are expected to take their oaths of office in groups of two to allow for social distancing.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives will also be sworn in by groups, though the size will be far larger given how many more House members there are, with members-elect to be sworn in first.<\/p>\n<p>Newly elected lawmakers often bring multiple family members to witness their swearing in and be part of photos commemorating the occasion.
