Malawi will launch an emergency cash transfer programme targeting about 1 million people and small businesses affected by the coronavirus pandemic,\u00a0President Arthur Peter Mutharika<\/span> has said.<\/span><\/p>\n He said eligible households will receive a 35,000 Malawi kwacha ($40) monthly payment, matching the country’s minimum wage, through mobile cash transfer starting in May, Mutharika said.<\/p>\n ALSO READ:\u00a0<\/strong>WHO tracks recovered patients to learn about long-term effects of Covid-19<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n “This will strengthen livelihoods,” Mutharika said in a\u00a0nightly national address on state television, without specifying\u00a0how long the programme would last.<\/p>\n The president has also expressed shock over death the third Malawian lost to the complications suffered from coronavirus infection, which he disclosed via a tweet.<\/p>\n https:\/\/twitter.com\/ThisIsMalawi\/status\/1253230909333164032?s=19<\/p>\n Report<\/a> said the low-income country, which so far seen has 36 positive cases of COVID-19 and three deaths, has suffered from economic stagnation in recent years, leading to increasing unrest over falling living standards.<\/p>\n The World Bank said last week it had approved a $37 million\u00a0funding package to help Malawi respond to the\u00a0coronavirus.<\/p>\n But the opposition and human rights bodies had already\u00a0criticized Mutharika’s handling of the outbreak, accusing him of\u00a0putting partisan interests first.<\/p>\n Malawi’s high court temporarily halted the government’s\u00a021-day coronavirus lockdown\u00a0pending a judicial review last week.<\/p>\n More consultation was needed to prevent harm to the poorest and\u00a0most vulnerable of society, the court said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Malawi will launch an emergency cash transfer programme targeting about 1 million people and small businesses affected by the coronavirus pandemic,\u00a0President Arthur Peter Mutharika has said.
