First batch: Nigerians in Ukraine arrive Abuja from Romania

The first batch of Nigerians in Ukraine, arrived at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport Abuja Friday morning aboard a Max Air flight.

The evacuees had been stranded after the Ukraine-Russia war broke out, but later escaped to neighbouring countries.

Most of them studying in Ukraine, fled the country for Romania after it was invaded by Russia, and many of them had been followed up and assisted by officials of the Nigerian embassy in the neighboring Eastern European countries the escaped to.

The passengers, numbering about 450 from Romania, landed at the private jet terminal of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by 7:10 am (WAT) aboard a Max Air flight.

On arrival, they were received by government officials and are expected to undergo documentation after which they will head home and self-isolate in line with the COVID-19 protocols.

The Federal Government have promised to resettle them in their homes and provide them with some money to enable readjust to their environment in the country.

Recalled, the Federal Government had, on Wednesday, approved $8.5 million for the immediate evacuation of 5,000 Nigerians stranded as a result of the Russia-Ukraine war.

The government earlier scheduled the arrival of the first batch of evacuees for Thursday. But the flight was rescheduled till Friday.
