The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the Edo State governorship election held on September 21, 2024.
Okpebholo secured victory in 13 out of 18 local government areas, receiving 235,773 votes, while his closest rival, Dr. Asue Ighodalo of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), garnered 195,954 votes.
Voter turnout was reported at less than 40%, with over 2.2 million eligible voters.
The election process was marred by allegations from the PDP regarding vote suppression in key areas, particularly in the populous LGAs of Oredo, Egor, and Ikpoba/Okha.
Reports indicated that security forces obstructed party agents and observers from accessing the INEC collation center in Benin City, raising concerns about transparency and the integrity of the results.
The PDP accused the APC of attempting to manipulate results by pressuring INEC officials to alter figures in their favour.

Despite these allegations, President Bola Tinubu praised Okpebholo’s victory as a reflection of the people’s will and acceptance of APC ideals.
The final results were announced after a tense collation process that saw initial results showing a close race between Okpebholo and Ighodalo.
The PDP has expressed intentions to challenge the election outcome, citing irregularities during the voting and counting processes.
As the political landscape evolves in Edo State, the implications of this election are significant for both parties as they prepare for future contests and governance challenges ahead.
