In a demonstration of solidarity and commitment to addressing the recent flooding crisis, Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima visited Maiduguri, Borno State, to assess the situation and offer support to the affected residents.

Shettima arrived in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on Tuesday, to conduct an on-the-ground assessment of the devastating floods that have swept through the state.

The visit, directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aims to evaluate the extent of the damage and provide immediate support to the affected communities.

Upon his arrival, VP Shettima was thoroughly soaked as he waded through the floodwaters to reach the affected areas, including the palace of the Shehu of Borno, which has been partly submerged.

The floods, triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam and excess water from the spillways, have caused widespread destruction, submerging homes, roads, and vital infrastructure in the capital city.

Thousands of people have been displaced, and critical facilities such as the Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, government house, and post office have been severely affected.

The hardest-hit areas include Fori, Galtimari, Gwange, and Bulabulin, where homes have been swept away and streets have become rivers.

The situation has also led to the escape of wild animals from the state zoo, including snakes, crocodiles, and ostriches, which are now roaming the streets.

During his visit, VP Shettima interacted with the displaced residents and held meetings with state and local government officials to coordinate a comprehensive response plan.

He assured the people that the federal government will provide substantial support to the state government in addressing the immediate needs of the affected communities.

Relief materials, including rice, are already being mobilized for distribution.

VP Shettima expressed deep concern over the situation and emphasized that the federal government will prioritise the welfare of the affected communities.

He noted that despite the implementation of contingency plans, the severity of the flood has far exceeded the government’s estimates.

The Vice President’s visit underscores the federal government’s commitment to supporting the people of Borno State during this challenging time.

President Tinubu has assured that the federal government will stand firmly behind the state government to address the needs of the affected people.

In his remarks, VP Shettima conveyed President Tinubu’s personal regards and best wishes to the people of Borno State, emphasizing that the president is determined to support the state in addressing the flood disaster.

The visit marks a significant step in the federal government’s efforts to tackle the challenges posed by the floods and to provide relief to the affected communities.
