Omoyele Sowore, Nigerian activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, was arrested today by armed police officers just outside the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Sowore had attended a hearing related to the terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Eyewitnesses report that after the hearing, Sowore was approached by security operatives who insisted he accompany them to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command.

Despite questioning the absence of a formal summons, Sowore complied and entered the police vehicle with his lawyers.

This arrest follows Sowore’s recent participation in a #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja, advocating for Kanu’s unconditional release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), where he has been held since June 2021.

Sowore has been a vocal critic of the Nigerian government and has faced multiple arrests in the past.

The police have not publicly disclosed the specific charges against Sowore at this time. His legal team is expected to seek clarification and challenge the legality of the arrest.
