President Bola Tinubu has departed Nigeria for Europe to continue his end of year holiday ahead of an official engagement in the United Arab Emirates, according to a statement from the Presidency.

The President left Lagos on Sunday and is expected to proceed from Europe to Abu Dhabi in early January, where he will participate in the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Summit.

The annual forum brings together global political leaders, policymakers, investors and development experts to discuss climate action, energy transition and sustainable economic growth.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga said Tinubu accepted an invitation from Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, to attend the summit, which is regarded as one of the world’s leading platforms on sustainability and innovation.

The Presidency noted that Tinubu’s participation aligns with Nigeria’s interest in attracting investment, strengthening international partnerships and positioning the country within global conversations on climate resilience and development financing.

Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria after the summit.

The trip has, however, attracted public attention, with critics questioning the timing of the holiday amid ongoing security and economic challenges at home, while government officials maintain that the engagement serves Nigeria’s long term strategic interests.
