UNIZIK expels student for assaulting lecturer

The authorities Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, have expelled a student, Goddy-Mbakwe Chimamaka Precious, following her assault on Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies.

This decision was announced on February 14, 2025, by the Acting Registrar, Victor Modebelu, after a thorough investigation by the Student Disciplinary Committee.

The altercation occurred on February 11, 2025, when Dr. Okoye interrupted Precious while she was recording a TikTok video on campus.

The situation escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Precious allegedly bit Dr. Okoye on the wrist and arm.

A video of the incident went viral on social media, prompting widespread public attention and debate regarding student conduct and faculty authority.

In response to the incident, UNIZIK’s management emphasized its commitment to upholding discipline and ethical standards within the university community.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, ordered an immediate investigation to ascertain the facts surrounding the event.

The university’s statement highlighted that Precious’s actions constituted gross misconduct and violated Regulation 4 of the Students Disciplinary Regulations.

The expulsion letter stated: “The Ag. Vice-Chancellor has received the report from the Student Disciplinary Committee… Consequently, you are hereby expelled from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.”

Precious has been directed to vacate the university premises immediately and return any university property in her possession.

The incident has sparked significant discussion online, with mixed reactions from students and members of the public.

Some have condemned Precious’s actions as unacceptable behavior towards faculty, while others have expressed concerns about potential abuse of power by lecturers.

Additionally, a Nigerian man based in Canada has offered financial support to any lawyer willing to defend Precious in light of her expulsion.
