The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially begun the payment of the new N70,000 minimum wage, which will significantly impact over 1.2 million civil servants.
This wage increase, effective from July 29, 2024, follows the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act and represents a substantial rise from the previous minimum wage of N30,000.

The total salary expenditure for civil servants is projected to reach approximately N4 trillion*annually.
The government has issued a detailed salary table outlining adjustments across various levels within the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (COMPSS).
While the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA) has praised the wage increase, it raised concerns regarding penalties for non-compliance by employers in both public and private sectors, emphasising that paying below this threshold could result in imprisonment.
