Prof Yemi Osinbajo was confirmed as the keynote speaker for the inaugural Igbobi College Old Boys’ Association ICOBA Public Lecture, scheduled as a major highlight of activities marking the 94th Founders’ Day celebration of Igbobi College in Lagos.

The announcement generated strong interest among alumni, education stakeholders and the wider public, given Osinbajo’s long standing association with the institution and his national profile as a former Vice President and senior advocate of educational reform.

Osinbajo is a distinguished alumnus of Igbobi College, and his selection was described by organisers as a deliberate effort to anchor the inaugural lecture on credibility, experience and a deep understanding of the school’s legacy.

He was scheduled to speak on the theme “Endowment as Legacy: Building Generational Strength for Educational Institutions in Nigeria.”

The theme was framed to address the growing challenges facing legacy schools in Nigeria, particularly funding constraints, ageing infrastructure and the need to preserve academic standards in a changing educational environment.

Osinbajo’s address was expected to draw from his experience in public service, academia and policy development to highlight sustainable models for funding education beyond government subventions.

Organisers said the lecture was intended to inspire alumni and stakeholders to see endowment giving not as charity, but as a long term investment in institutional stability and national development.

The public lecture was also strategically linked to the formal launch of a N10 billion ICOBA Endowment Fund.

The fund was designed to secure the long term financial sustainability of Igbobi College and reduce over dependence on ad hoc funding and tuition driven income.

According to ICOBA, proceeds from the endowment would be deployed to upgrade infrastructure, strengthen academic and extracurricular programmes, support staff development and provide scholarships and welfare support for students.

The initiative was presented as part of a broader vision to preserve Igbobi College’s heritage while positioning it to compete effectively in the future.

Stakeholders described the inaugural lecture and endowment launch as a defining moment in the school’s history, aimed at ensuring that its values, standards and impact endure for generations to come.
