Former President Goodluck Jonathan has publicly addressed the controversial suspension of former Central Bank Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, now the Emir of Kano.
Speaking at a recent book launch, Jonathan denied that Sanusi was dismissed for alleging that $49.8 billion went missing from government accounts, asserting instead that the suspension was due to financial misconduct and a need for investigation into the Central Bank’s expenditures.
In 2013, Sanusi raised alarms about discrepancies in oil revenue remittances, initially claiming $49 billion was unaccounted for.
This figure was later revised to $20 billion after discussions with the Ministry of Finance.
The Jonathan administration quickly dismissed these claims, with some officials accusing Sanusi of attempting to undermine the government.
In February 2014, shortly after his allegations, Jonathan suspended Sanusi for “financial recklessness and misconduct.”

During the book launch, Jonathan emphasized that such a significant amount could not have disappeared without immediate repercussions, given Nigeria’s budget at the time was around $32 billion.
He recounted a conversation with former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who questioned how such a loss could go unnoticed in a struggling economy.
Jonathan stated that Sanusi’s claims became inconsistent as the figures changed over time.
Sanusi responded to Jonathan’s remarks by reiterating that he felt he was “constructively dismissed” but expressed respect for Jonathan and held no grudges.
He also lamented attempts to hinder significant projects like the Dangote Refinery, advocating for Nigeria to capitalize on opportunities to end fuel importation.
The exchange highlights ongoing tensions in Nigeria regarding accountability and governance, with many Nigerians viewing Sanusi’s suspension as politically motivated due to his whistleblowing activities.
