Mayflower School in Ikenne, Ogun State, celebrated its 70th Founder’s Day anniversary with a week‑long programme running from 16 January to 23 January 2026.
The celebration marked seven decades since the school’s establishment in 1956 by the renowned educationist Dr Tai Solarin and his British wife, Sheila Solarin, whose vision laid the foundation for the school’s commitment to academic excellence and moral education.
Former Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo was among the dignitaries chosen to be honoured during the anniversary events. He was recognised alongside the late Tai Solarin and Sheila Solarin for his contributions to education, leadership and national development.

The Mayflower Old Students Association announced that Osinbajo’s name topped the list of honourees, highlighting his distinguished record as an alumnus and his continued engagement in public service that has inspired generations of Nigerians.
Organisers said the celebration included the sounding of the anniversary bell 70 times, one for each year of the school’s existence. Branded notebooks were distributed to students as a gesture to encourage learning and academic diligence.
Sporting events were organised throughout the week, fostering camaraderie among students and alumni. Academic prizes were presented to outstanding students in recognition of excellence and perseverance.
A new main entrance emblem was commissioned, symbolising the school’s enduring commitment to educational growth, innovation and community service.
The honour conferred on Prof Osinbajo underscored both his stature as a distinguished alumnus and the school’s legacy of producing professionals and leaders across diverse sectors.
The week‑long programme reaffirmed Mayflower School’s role as a beacon of quality education in Nigeria and celebrated seven decades of resilience, vision and achievement.
