The city of Ibadan is in mourning following the passing of Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, at the age of 81.
Oba Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, who assumed the throne two years ago, received the Staff of Office from Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on March 11, 2022.
The news was confirmed on Thursday evening, March 14, 2024, in a statement released by the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.
Oba Balogun reportedly died at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, at the age of 81.
In the statement released by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Governor Makinde paid his respects, calling the late Olubadan a “towering figure” and a “mighty Iroko tree” – a symbolic reference to the Iroko tree’s immense size and strength in Yoruba culture.

He highlighted Oba Balogun’s positive impact on Ibadanland during his brief reign, praising him for his cosmopolitan outlook and the “indelible marks” he left on the city’s history.
The statement offered condolences to the Olubadan family, the Olubadan-in-Council, the Oyo State Traditional Council, and the entire Ibadan community. It further acknowledged the void Oba Balogun’s passing leaves in the city’s rich heritage.
