President Bola Tinubu has formally sworn in Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the substantive Inspector‑General of Police at a ceremony at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday, capping a swift leadership transition within the Nigeria Police Force.

The swearing‑in follows the unanimous endorsement of Disu’s appointment by the Nigeria Police Council earlier in the week.

The oath of office was administered at about 2:53 pm at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, in the presence of Vice President Kashim Shettima, senior federal officials and members of the Federal Executive Council.

President Tinubu also administered oaths of office to newly appointed commissioners of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission and the Federal Civil Service Commission.

Disu’s elevation to the role of substantive IGP comes just days after he was named acting head of the police following the resignation of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun.

His confirmation by the Police Council, which is chaired by the President and includes state governors and other key stakeholders, cleared the way for the formal assumption of office.

In remarks following his swearing‑in, the new IGP signalled a commitment to advancing reforms within the force, emphasising professionalism, accountability and collaboration with other security agencies.

He also reaffirmed support for ongoing discussions on the establishment of state police as part of broader security sector reforms.

The leadership change unfolds against a backdrop of persistent security challenges nationwide, with expectations that the substantive appointment will bring renewed focus and stability to policing operations across Nigeria.
