A 37-year-old woman, Renee Nicole Good, was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent during a federal immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis on Wednesday morning, provoking widespread criticism, protests and calls for accountability.
Good, a U.S. citizen and resident of the Twin Cities described by family and community leaders as a mother, poet, writer and compassionate neighbour, was killed while in her vehicle in a residential neighbourhood south of downtown Minneapolis.
Federal authorities, including the Department of Homeland Security, said the incident occurred as ICE agents were engaged in what has been described as one of the largest immigration enforcement operations in the state’s history, with over 2 000 officers deployed.

Officials characterised the situation as volatile and said that the agent fired in self-defence after Good allegedly attempted to “weaponise her vehicle” and drive it towards officers.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the shooting as a lawful response to a perceived threat.
Video footage shared widely on social media and accounts from local officials and eyewitnesses sharply contradict the federal narrative.
Multiple clips show Good’s SUV stopped in the road as ICE agents approach, and in some footage she appears to be trying to move away rather than aggressively attack.
Witnesses and local leaders say the vehicle was driven slowly and not directly at officers before shots were fired, and the police chief noted that agents appeared to fire at close range as the vehicle pulled away.
The shooting has intensified political conflict.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz publicly disputed the federal account, calling it misleading and stating that the death was unnecessary.
Frey condemned ICE’s presence in the city and demanded the agency leave, while city councillors called for the ICE agent involved to be arrested and charged.
Community members, including immigrant rights activists and neighbours, gathered at the scene in growing numbers, with hundreds attending a vigil and protest near the site where Good was shot.
Family members described Good as “an amazing human being” and said she was not participating in any aggressive action against law enforcement.
Good’s mother and others said she had been caring for neighbours when the incident occurred, adding that the family was still processing the tragedy.
Federal and state authorities are investigating the killing, with both the FBI and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension involved.
The case has fuelled broader debate over immigration enforcement tactics under the current administration and raised concerns about the use of deadly force by federal agents in civilian settings.
