Former Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, on Tuesday, joined dignitaries, family, and close associates at a programme in Lagos celebrating the life and legacy of the late Dr. Doyin Abiola, describing her as a courageous patriot and tireless fighter for democracy and the rule of law.

Prof. Osinbajo, who paid tribute to the pioneering journalist and beloved matriarch, said Dr. Abiola’s life embodied resilience, faith, and a commitment to justice. “She stood tall at every moment when democracy and the rule of law were tested. Her courage and convictions will continue to inspire generations,” he noted.

The gathering brought together leaders from government, business, media, and the church. Among those present were the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake; the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, who is also Dr. Abiola’s goddaughter; and the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Mrs. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin.

Also in attendance was Pastor Godman Alabi, Senior Pastor of The Elevation Church, alongside other family friends and associates who shared glowing memories of Dr. Abiola’s impact on journalism, public life, and the democratic journey of the nation.

Special prayers were offered for the family, especially her daughter, Doyinsola Abiola Tobun; her husband, Bamise Tobun; their children; and the wider Abiola family, with speakers urging them to draw strength from the indelible legacy she leaves behind.

Dr. Abiola, widow of the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, is remembered not only for her trailblazing contributions to Nigerian journalism as the first female editor of a national daily newspaper, but also for her quiet but unyielding role in the struggle for democracy.

Her life, attendees affirmed, remains a powerful testimony of faith, service, and sacrifice for Nigeria’s collective good.
