Nigeria’s immediate past Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has paid a condolence visit to the family of the late founder of First City Merchant Bank (FCMB), Otunba Michael Olasubomi Balogun.
Osinbajo arrived at the Lagos residence of the Baloguns in the company of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, Sunday afternoon, June 4, 2023, where he was received by the widow of the deceased, Olori Abimbola Balogun.
The former Vice President, who was also welcomed into the Baloguns’ residence by their children, Bolaji, Jide, Ladi, and Gboyega, speaking, said, “We bless the name of the Lord for the life of service to school, profession, community, nation and so many others of our father, Olori Omo Oba Subomi Balogun.
He also played with the family, “May his memory remain blessed forever. Amen.”
Balogun, the Olori Omo Oba of Ijebu had died on Thursday, May 18, in London, aged 89, following a brief illness, as earlier announced by the family.
Prof Osinbajo’s visit was a follow-up to a condolence statement he had personally signed and issued to the family on Saturday, May 20, where he described the late Nigerian banking legend as “noble in word and deed, an outstanding legal mind, and a doyen of the Nigerian capital market and investment banking.”

Following Otunba Balogun, Prof Osinbajo said, “The tribe of true nobility and greatness is diminished by one!”
“Olori Omo Oba Subomi Balogun, noble in word and deed, outstanding legal mind, doyen of the Nigerian capital market and investment banking, deep, wise, forthright, kind to all, and God-fearing,” Osinbajo said.
While noting that the late Chief Balogun would be “remembered with much affection, respect and admiration, Osinbajo said, “We pray that the Lord will comfort aunty (Olori), our dear brothers and the entire family in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
Dignitaries present during Prof Osinbajo’s visit include former Ogun State governor and chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Segun Osoba, Chief Margaret Olayinka Ajayi, wife of the late legal luminary, Chief G.O.K. Ajayi, SAN and former Secretary to Ogun State Government (SSG), Mr Olatokunbo Joseph Talabi.
Representatives of the Old Boys Students Association of Igbobi College Yaba, Lagos, were also in attendance during Prof Osinbajo’s visit to the late Balogun’s family.
