Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, were on Monday honoured by the Federal Government with cash rewards of $100,000 each, housing in Abuja, and national honours following their historic fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title win.

The recognition ceremony, held at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja, was presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The event celebrated the team’s recent triumph in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, where they secured a dominant 78–64 victory over Mali in the final to claim their seventh AfroBasket crown.

Each player on the victorious D’Tigress team received a cash reward of $100,000 (USD), a three-bedroom flat in Abuja under the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme, and was conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

Members of the coaching and technical crew were each awarded $50,000 (USD), a housing unit, and also received the OON national honour.

Vice President Shettima, delivering the President’s message, praised the players for their discipline, unity, and outstanding representation of the country.

“This team has once again proven that Nigeria is a beacon of sporting excellence in Africa. Your determination and commitment have inspired the nation,” he said.

In attendance were First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Minister of Sports Development Senator John Owan Enoh, and other top government officials.

President Tinubu, who had earlier commended the team for their performance, reaffirmed the government’s support for women’s sports and promised continuous investment in talent development.

The ceremony is viewed by observers as a reaffirmation of the Tinubu administration’s commitment to honouring excellence and motivating future generations of Nigerian athletes.
