Prayer is a command from GOD, but spiritual vulnerability is not.
There is a profound difference between seeking GOD and becoming dependent on men who claim exclusive access to Him. Christianity calls believers to trust JESUS CHRIST, not personalities. While GOD has always raised faithful servants, the Bible also makes it clear that counterfeit ministers exist, men who exploit fear, ignorance and desperation for personal gain.
JESUS CHRIST did not merely predict this, He warned His followers to be on guard.
“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.” (Matthew 7:15).
The danger was never wolves appearing as wolves. The danger was wolves disguised as sheep. Deception is effective because it often resembles truth. Wolves do not announce themselves. They blend in. They speak the language of faith, quote Scripture, wear the appearance of spirituality and often display remarkable charisma. Their greatest weapon is not force, it is credibility.
Many believers spend their lives moving from one prophet, seer or spiritual leader to another, desperately searching for revelations about tomorrow. In the process, faith quietly gives way to fear. Instead of growing in their relationship with GOD, they become addicted to predictions. Every decision requires another prophecy, every challenge demands another consultation, every setback is attributed to unseen enemies revealed only by someone claiming special insight.
When people continually seek someone to “see” for them, they often hear exactly what their fears are prepared to believe. A manipulator understands that fear creates dependence. If someone is convinced that invisible dangers surround every step, that person becomes easy to control. Every supposed revelation creates another reason to return, another promise to chase, another solution to purchase, another cycle of dependence that never truly ends.
This is precisely why Scripture repeatedly directs believers back to discernment rather than dependence.
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of GOD: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” (1 John 4:1).
Notice that believers are not instructed to accept every prophecy. They are commanded to test every spirit.
The Berean Christians became an example for all generations because they refused blind dependence, even on the Apostle Paul.
“These were more noble… in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” (Acts 17:11).
Their nobility was found in discernment. They measured every teaching against the Word of GOD.
One of the Bible’s most sobering accounts of spiritual deception is found in 1 Kings 13. A young prophet received clear instructions directly from GOD. Yet an older prophet falsely claimed that an angel had given him a different message. Instead of remaining obedient to what GOD had already spoken, the younger man believed the new revelation. The consequence was fatal. The lesson is timeless. No claimed revelation, regardless of who delivers it, should override what GOD has already established.

The New Testament presents another warning through Simon the sorcerer in Acts 8. Simon recognised the influence of the Holy Spirit, but viewed spiritual power as something that could be acquired and controlled for personal advantage. Peter rebuked him sharply, revealing that spiritual gifts are never commodities to be bought, sold or manipulated. Wherever spirituality becomes a marketplace of fear, payments and promised miracles, believers ought to exercise great caution.
Peter also warned that exploitation would become a defining mark of false teachers.
“And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you.” (2 Peter 2:3).
The expression “make merchandise of you” is deeply revealing. It describes people who no longer see believers as souls to shepherd, but as commodities to exploit. Fear becomes the product, vulnerability becomes the market, and human desperation becomes the source of profit.
Scripture also teaches that every believer has access to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of GOD, they are the sons of GOD.” (Romans 8:14).
This does not eliminate the place of pastors and teachers, but it rejects the notion that a Christian must live in perpetual dependence on a human intermediary before hearing from GOD.
One of the greatest dangers of deception is that it weakens the mind while appearing to strengthen the spirit. A person who abandons discernment gradually surrenders responsibility for every decision. Fear replaces wisdom, dependence replaces faith, and manipulation replaces discipleship.
The Christian writer A. W. Tozer observed, “A frightened world needs a fearless Church.” Fear has never been the foundation of authentic Christianity.
C. S. Lewis wrote, “Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point.” A believer grounded in CHRIST is not governed by panic, but by confidence in GOD’s character and promises.
The philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, whose writings were deeply rooted in Christian faith, argued that truth demands a personal relationship with GOD, not merely conformity to religious systems or personalities. Authentic faith cannot be borrowed from another person. Every believer must stand before GOD personally.
The German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer warned that stupidity is often more dangerous than evil because it refuses to examine truth. Spiritually, this reminds us that believers who neglect discernment become vulnerable to deception, even when they are sincere.
The Apostle John offers a powerful antidote to fear.
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment.” (1 John 4:18).
Fear has torment. That single phrase explains why many never find rest. A faith continually sustained by frightening revelations, recurring prophecies of doom and endless predictions of disaster is not producing the confidence that CHRIST promised. The Holy Spirit convicts, corrects and warns, but He does not enslave believers to perpetual terror.
JESUS said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27).
He did not say His sheep permanently depend on another sheep to hear His voice. He said they hear His voice. This is one of the greatest privileges of the New Covenant, every believer has direct access to GOD through JESUS CHRIST.
Pray consistently. Honour faithful ministers of the Gospel. Receive godly counsel. Value genuine prophetic ministry where it glorifies CHRIST and agrees with Scripture. But never surrender your discernment. Never allow fear to become your spirituality. Never let anyone convince you that your relationship with GOD can only exist through them.
Prayer should deepen your dependence on GOD, not your dependence on men.
Be prayerful, not vulnerable.
Pray fervently, not fearfully.
