Nigeria’s organised labour unions have suspended the nationwide strike action which began on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, to press home their demands against the national government.
The National Executive Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Wednesday night decided to suspend the strike following the intervention of the country’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
The unions before the suspension of the strike had been invited for a meeting with government representatives and it commenced a few minutes past 7:00 p.m. at the statehouse.
The meeting lasted for close to one hour, and later on, various affiliates and state chapters of the unions reviewed the outcome of the meeting held between the leaders of the organised labour and presided over by Ribadu.
Speaking on behalf of the unions, the National Deputy Vice President of the TUC, Tommy Etim, also later made public the decision of its executive council, saying, the NEC of the NLC and the TUC have suspended the strike based on their trust in the National Security Adviser, Ribadu, who gave them his words.

Earlier in the day, the NSA, Ribadu, had announced that the individuals responsible for the brutalisation of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero had been arrested.
The organised labour had called for the nationwide strike in protest against the alleged brutalisation of its National President, Ajaero, and the failure of the government to implement some of the agreements reached on October 2, 2023, effectively.
