The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has ordered all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to withdraw their services from Monday, June 1, 2026, in an indefinite strike over the continued captivity of abducted teachers and pupils.

The directive from the union’s national leadership is a direct response to what it describes as the unresolved abduction crisis, with victims still in captivity and no clear timeline for their safe release.

The union said the situation has deepened fear among teachers, disrupted confidence in the school system, and discouraged parents from sending children to school, while also heightening tension across affected communities.

It stated that the industrial action is intended to compel urgent government intervention and stronger security measures aimed at securing the immediate and safe release of all abducted persons.

Teachers across the state have been instructed to fully comply with the directive, remain law abiding, and stay at home throughout the duration of the strike.

The union also reaffirmed its solidarity with the abducted teachers, pupils, and their families, noting that it will continue lawful engagement with relevant authorities until the victims are freed.

Signed by Hassan A Fatai, Chairman, NUT Oyo State Wing, and Comrade Salami Olukayode, Secretary, the statement restated the union’s commitment to the welfare and safety of teachers and learners nationwide.
