Nigeria declares Tuesday, July 15 public holiday to honour Buhari

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, July 16, 2025, a public holiday to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in London at the age of 82.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji‑Ojo, announced the holiday in a statement on Monday, noting that it was approved by President Bola Tinubu as part of a week‑long national mourning. National flags will also fly at half‑mast during the period.

Buhari’s remains are expected to arrive in Nigeria on Tuesday, with burial scheduled in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, the same day, in accordance with Islamic rites.

Government offices, schools, and public institutions nationwide will be closed on Tuesday as citizens reflect on the late president’s life and contributions.
