Vice President Kashim Shettima, who is in London overseeing the repatriation process, is expected to return to Nigeria later.
Today was declared a national day of mourning, with flags flying at half-mast across the country to honour the late president, who led Nigeria as a military ruler from 1983 to 1985 and as an elected president from 2015 to 2023.
Security was heightened in Katsina and Daura to manage the large crowds of mourners who gathered to pay their respects.
