France begin campaign with controlled victory

Kylian Mbappé delivered one of the defining early statements of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scoring twice as France opened their campaign with a 3 to 1 win over Senegal, extending his status as one of the tournament’s central figures and reinforcing France’s intent to mount another deep run in the competition.

First half, Senegal frustrate France

Senegal started with intensity and structure, closing passing lanes and forcing France into wide areas. Their pressing approach unsettled the French attack, with limited clear chances created in the opening stages.

France struggled to establish fluid combinations in the final third. Even with their attacking talent in advanced positions, the team lacked sharpness in decision making and tempo.

Senegal created the more dangerous moments before the break, including a couple of promising attacks that tested the French defence. However, neither side managed to find the breakthrough before half time.

Second half, Mbappé changes the game

The match shifted after the interval as France increased their speed in possession and began to find more space between the lines.

Kylian Mbappé delivered the opening goal in the second half, finishing a well worked attacking move that broke Senegal’s resistance. His movement and acceleration proved decisive in unlocking a previously compact defence.

Once ahead, France gained confidence and controlled possession more effectively, pushing Senegal deeper into their own half.

Mbappé seals the result with second goal

Senegal attempted to respond but were exposed as they pushed forward. France exploited the space, and Mbappé struck again to complete his brace, effectively sealing the contest.

His finishing ability and timing in the box proved the difference between the sides, underlining his importance to France in major tournaments.

World Cup Late goal from Senegal

Senegal managed a late consolation goal after capitalising on a brief defensive lapse from France. The strike briefly lifted their supporters but came too late to influence the outcome.

France responded by managing the closing stages calmly, maintaining control until the final whistle.

Strong start for France, lessons for Senegal

France leave the match with three points and early momentum in their group, showing resilience and efficiency despite an uneven first half performance.

Senegal, meanwhile, will take encouragement from their opening spell, where they matched the reigning contenders in intensity and organisation. However, their inability to convert chances and maintain concentration after conceding proved costly.

The result sets France on course for a strong group campaign, while Senegal are left needing a response in their remaining fixtures.
